Sticks and Stones” are what I call those elements of a painting, which while small and perhaps glossed over as insignificant, might just contribute more than we realize at first glance – the barbed wire dangling from a fence post, the knot that alters the surface of a plank, the stones scattered about a burrow, dry grass tangled in an animals fur… The list goes on – this isn’t just about wood and rock, it’s about drawing the viewers’ attention deeper into the painting and creating greater interest in the subject. Attention to textures and what I’ll call “interruptions in form”, can be the difference between acknowledging a good painting and being drawn into an interesting one.
