Artist Statement
Chris Peterson’s art quilts are interpretations of her memories: people, places, buildings and nature. She works with fabrics because they feel good in her hands. and she finds that they are amazing in the way they choose to play with one another!
Her process is to sketch a memory from which she creates an original pattern. Then she begins choosing fabrics, threads, and embellishments. Once the quilt top is pieced, it is placed on top of a layer of cotton batting and a backing finally, the quilting begins. She uses satin stitching, free-motion, hand stitching and embroidery.
Many pieces include hand dyed fabrics and inks. Each piece begins by feeling inventive, but as strange as it sounds, at some point the quilt starts telling her what to do, as well as when to stop.
